In 1796, the Magyarszentmihály plain, as a part of the Elemér manor, was inhabited by families engaged in tobacco gardening according to the plans for formal settlement by Izsák Kiss. Later, Ernő Kiss settled tobacco gardeners, and then even more gardeners came from the Pallavicini manor in Sövényháza. Its first church with walls plastered with mud and thatched roof was built in 1835.
