It is mentioned as Papkeresztúr in a charter in the 14th century. Its owner at the time was Lőrincz Bernátfia. Then in a document in 1717 it is called Kistúr, and in the 19th century it became Ókeresztúr. During the Turkish occupation, 10 houses were listed here with Hungarian inhabitants, but the settlement soon became depopulated. In 1702, the plain was awarded to the bishop of Csanád. The plain became part of the Tamiš Banat, a territory cut from Hungary, and after the recapture of Timisoara, Serbs began to settle here. At the end of the 18th century, the Hungarian minority settled here as tobacco gardeners. Ókeresztúr today belongs to the Municipality of Törökkanizsa in Banat.
