The settlement along the river Maros was first mentioned in 1490, its name likely originating from a personal name. Its area was abandoned during the Turkish occupation. In 1746 the directorate of the Banat of Temeswar settled Serbian border guards there, by the end of the 18th century the number of residents increased to around one thousand. In 1804 the 7111 acres of lordship, including Szőreg, Klárafalva and Ferencszállás came under the jurisdiction of Baron Gerliczy and his family. From the second half of the 18th century, several tobacco growers of Szeged have begun settling here. By the middle of the 19th century, the number of residents increased to 2240, more than half of which were Serbian nationals during this period. The soil here was ideal for gardening. Nowadays, its residents are engaged in rose horticulture, and land cultivation along the border.
The settlement belongs to the Szeged District of Csongrád county, its number of residents in 2011 was over 4000.
The settlement is structured by its streets: it consists of main streets and joining secondary streets aligned to the Szeged-Makó route going through the settlement and to roads leading to the river Maros. Its central parts are dominated by a traditional streetscape, with pitched roof houses and ones facing the street. They are characterized by a modest stucco of their gable and facade. Newly built parts are built in a chessboard pattern with cube-shaped houses and multi-story family houses.
