Gyála is mentioned in 1450 as the property of Miklós Erdélyi and János Bessenyő. Ethnographer Sándor Bálint considered it a thriving Hungarian village in the Middle Ages. It faded during the Ottoman rule, but after the expulsion of the Turks, it became part of the treasury estate of Szőreg, and from 1783 Szeged leased the area for 25 years. During this time, the majority of the population consisted of Serbs but people from Szeged also came to Gyála as farmhands or to take part in share farming and tobacco gardening.
