The township situated at the right bank of the backwater of Tisza was first mentioned in 1439. The village, which had been destroyed during the Turkish occupation, was occupied by Serbian soldiers of the Tisza border guard in the beginning of the 18th century, their descendants became “Hungarified”. In the second part of the 18th century, it was settled by tobacco cultivators from Szeged-Alsóváros. After the institution of tobacco monopoly (1851), the population switched to cultivating paprika. It became an independent township in 1950 with the annexing of border sections Feketeszél and Nagyszéksós populated with farms. The heart of its area consists of lands formerly belonging to tobacco cultivators, it has a street structure of a single, long street bordered by irregular, narrow alleys. It has a population of 3400.
