Banatski Monoštor
The family monastery of the Csanád clan stood once in the place of the settlement. This is mentioned in a charter in 1233, in which Andrew II promised 2,000 rock salts to the local religious order called Monasterium Kenaz. It was inhabited by Serbian shepherds during the Turkish rule, but after that it was mentioned as a plain under the chamber’s authority as part of the Csóka manor. When Lőrinc Marczibányi bought the Csóka estate with the surrounding plains in 1782, he also settled families of tobacco gardeners from around Szeged in Monostor. According to ethnographer Lajos Kálmány, the vernacular and traditions of the people of Monostor preserved archaic elements typical for the inhabitants of Szeged.
